EXPLORERS PULL OUT 24-23 WIN AT NOKOMIS IN OT — Lightning suspended the Prairie State Conference game between the Marquette Catholic Explorers and Nokomis Redskins on Friday. Marquette came back on Saturday and provided some thunder, winning 24-23 in overtime over the Redskins.
With the win, the Explorers are now 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the PSC, while Nokomis plummeted to 0-4 overall and 0-2 on the league slate.
The game was called with 10:40 remaining in the second quarter with a scoreless stalemate on Friday, picking up again at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Marquette and Nokomis returned Saturday to battle to a 17-17 tie at the end of regulation.
The Explorers rallied to tie the game after trailing by 10 points midway through the fourth quarter. A D'avion Peebles rushing touchdown and a 40-yard field goal by Liam Maher knotted it up to send it to OT.
Marquette quarterback Trey Aguirre scored on a 10-yard run on the team's first possession of OT, while Maher booted the extra point to make it 24-17.
The Redskins responded with a TD run by quarterback Chris McQuire, but attempted a fake PAT and ran for the end zone to go for the win. Brian Nagy of the Explorers tackled Nokomis' Aaron Lovelace short of the goal line to deny the Redskins and hand Marquette the dramatic one-point victory.
The other score for the Explorers came in the second quarter when Aguirre hooked up with wide receiver Jesse Simmons through the air for a score.
Marquette returns home for Week 5, battling East Alton-Wood River in PSC play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Public School Stadium.
OILERS COME UP SHORT VS. JERSEY — The Jersey Panthers visited the Wood River Soccer Park on Saturday and defeated the East Alton-Wood River Oilers 3-1 in a nonconference soccer match.
All the scoring took place in the first half, as Jersey improved to 10-1 on the season with the win. EA-WR dipped to 7-3-1 with the loss. Two of its losses have come to the Panthers.
The Oilers' goal came off the foot of David Barrett. It was an unassisted score.
Goalie Nick Barrett made 12 saves in the net for EA-WR during the loss.
The Oilers next play host to Carlyle at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
ROXANA ROUTES VANDALIA 9-2 — The Roxana Shells went to Vandalia and found its offense on Saturday in a 9-2 South Central Conference win.
The scoring outburst almost Roxana's goal total for the season. Entering Saturday the Shells had 10 goals in 10 games before scoring nine on the Vandals to improve to 5-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the SCC.
It was the second consecutive win for Roxana, which returns to action at 4:30 p.m. today at Jersey.
GRANITE CITY AND ALTON COME UP SHORT AT PANTHER INVITE — The Granite City Warriors and Alton Redbirds competed in the Panther Invite on Friday, but came up short of the tournament title.
Centralia took home gold, shooting a 302, while Althoff was second with a 304 and O'Fallon's blue squad was third with a 310. Granite City fired a 332, while Alton carded a 345 in the tournament.
Caleb Urshan of the Orphans garnered medalist honors with a 72.
The Warriors were led by Gavin Grote who shot 77. He was joined in the scoring lineup by: David Keel (83), Brandon Merz (84) and Riley Brown (89).
Max Hunter and Sam Ballard each guided the Redbirds with 81s. They were joined in the team scoring by: Matt Moore (91) and Austin Erthal (93).
