MARQUETTE 52, BUNKER HILL 12 – The Marquette Explorers are off to a flying start in Prairie State Conference play.
Marquette improved to 4-0 in conference play after beating the Minutemen on Saturday at Public School Stadium. The Explorers also had conference wins over Nokomis, EA-WR and Pawnee.
Brady McAfee, D’Avion Peebles and Treven Swingler each scored two touchdowns for Marquette, which will play Metro East Lutheran at 11 a.m. Saturday at Madison High School.
The Explorers improved to 4-2 with Saturday’s win. Marquette defeated Bunker Hill for the fifth straight year.
PAWNEE 42, EAST ALTON-WOOD RIVER 32 – Brayden Young rushed for 121 yards with a touchdown and caught for 130 yards for two TDs in the Oilers’ loss to Pawnee on Saturday on the road.
Quarterback Justin Englar threw for 219 yards for EA-WR, which lost to Pawnee for the third straight year.
EA-WR dropped to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in Prairie State Conference play. The Oilers will play South Fork at 7 p.m. Friday at home.
SOUTHWESTERN INVITATIONAL – Civic Memorial won the boys’ division championship with seven points at the Southwestern Invitational on Saturday.
The meet was divided into five flights. CM finished first in four of those flights.
Cohl Callies won the No. 2 flight with a 17:42, Parker Borth was first in the No. 3 flight in 18:59, Drake Stephenson won the No. 4 flight in 19:57 and Colton Hyman came out on top in the No. 5 flight with a 20:04. Sam Hurst finished fourth in the No. 1 flight in 17:42.
In the girls’ race, Zoey Lewis was sixth with a 22:25 in the No. 1 flight and Lydia Peal finished seventh with a 27:19 in the No. 2 flight.
PEORIA INVITATIONAL – Granite City brothers Will and Andrew O’Keefe finished 43rd and 45th, respectively, in the Peoria Invitational on Saturday at Detweiller Park, which is the site of the state meet on November 5.
Will ran a time of 15 minutes, 30 seconds and Andrew finished with a 15:32. A total of 254 runners competed in the boys’ race.
Arie Macias was Alton’s top finisher in the boys race, placing 112th with a 16:15.
In the girls’ race, Alton’s Emma Voumard was 158th with a 20:59.7 and Granite City’s Chessy Nikonowicz was 175th with a 21:52.
Granite City finished 26th with 729 points in the boys’ division and 33rd with 1,020 points in the girls division. Alton placed 31st with 815 points in the boys’ division and 32nd with 945 in the girls’ division.
Both Granite City and Alton will compete in the Madison County championship meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson Park in Granite City.
WHEATON NORTH FALCON CLASSIC – The Edwardsville girls cross country team placed 12th out of 27 teams with 82 points in the Wheaton North Falcon Classic on Saturday at the St. James Farm Forest Preserve in Warrenville.
The meet was divided into seven flights. Sophomore Jaycie Hudson turned in the Tigers’ best finish, placed fourth in 18:50.5 in the No. 4 flight.
LOCKPORT INVITATIONAL – The Edwardsville boys cross country team placed fourth with 158 points on Saturday in the Lockport Invitational.
Roland Prenzler placed 13th with a 16:39, Franky Romano finished 33rd with a 17:04.2, Dan Powell was 34th with a 17:04.5 and Jack Pifer was 35th with a 17:05.7.
JACKSONVILLE INVITATIONAL – EA-WR placed 13th with 68 points and Granite City finished 16th with 83 points in the boys’ race of the Jacksonville Invitational.
The meet was divided into seven flights.
Andrew Noack was the Oilers’ top finisher, placing ninth in 17:47 in the sixth flight. Eri Neri placed ninth in 17:43 in the fifth flight to lead the Warriors.
Also for EA-WR, Carissa Gilreath placed seventh in 21:40 in the sixth flight of the girls’ race.
Roxana had all of its runners compete in the open division. Cree Stumpf was the Shells’ top finisher in the boys’ division, placing third with a 16:28. Michaela Tarpley finished fifth with a 20:33 in the girls’ race.
PRAIRIE STATE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT – The Marquette Explorers won the Prairie State Conference tournament championship for the fifth year in a row on Saturday.
Marquette placed first with a four-player score of 300.
Nick Messinger fired a 73, Michael Holtz shot a 74, Kolten Bauer finished with a 75, Duncan McLain shot a 78, Jack Patterson had an 85 and Sam Cogan had an 89 for the Explorers, who will compete in the Class 2A Roxana Regional on Tuesday at Belk Park in Wood River.
EA-WR’s Drew Sobol shot an even-par 72 to earn medalist honors. The Oilers finished second with a 371.
Metro-East Lutheran finished third.
ALTON 1, GIBAULT 0 – Skylar Funk scored the Redbirds’ lone goal in their win over the Hawks on Saturday.
Alton improved to 12-3-2 and will play a road match against Jersey at 6:45 tonight.
EDWARDSVILLE 2, ST. MARY’S 0 – Bayne Noll and Michael Picchiotti scored goals to lead the Tigers to a road victory over St. Mary’s on Saturday.
Edwardsville improved to 12-0-5 and will travel to CBC at 6 p.m. Wednesday to take on the Cadets.
LOUISVILLE (KY.) COLLEGIATE 3, GRANITE CITY 1; COLUMBIA 3, GRANITE CITY 1; GRANITE CITY 3, DUNLAP 0 – The Warriors finished with 1-2 in Bracket E of the Gateway City Soccer Classic over the weekend.
Granite City began play on Friday with a loss to Louisville (Ky.) Collegiate. On Saturday, the Warriors lost to Columbia in the consolation semifinals, then bounced back to shut out Dunlap in the seventh-place game.
Granite City is 2-8-6 and will play Belleville East at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gene Baker Field.
ROXANA DEF. MULBERRY GROVE 25-13, 25-10; LINCOLNWOOD DEF. ROXANA 28-26, 25-15 – The Shells placed fourth with a 3-2 record in the Morrisonville Tournament after losing to Lincolnwood in the third-place match.
Roxana began tournament play on Wednesday with wins over Mt. Olive and Greenview and a loss to tournament runner-up Bunker Hill.
The Shells finished second in their pool after beating Mulberry Grove on Saturday, sending them to the third-place match against Lincolnwood, which also finished second in its pool.
Senior Niah Bevolo was the Shells’ lone representative on the all-tournament team.
Roxana is now 16-7 and will play a home match against Pana at 6 tonight.
KIRKWOOD 3, EDWARDSVILLE 2 (OT) – The Tigers dropped to 9-6-1 with a loss to the Pioneers on Saturday in a home match.
Maren McSparin and Annie Mulford each scored a goal for Edwardsville, which will play Eureka (Mo.) at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Public School Tournament.
