BOYS’ BASKETBALL
MARQUETTE CATHOLIC 47, MADISON 39 -- The Explorers braved the wintry conditions on Friday and pulled off a road victory over the Trojans.
Marquette won its fourth game in a row and improved to 8-1. The Alton school also had a four-game winning streak in the beginning of the season.
An ice storm hit the Metro East area on Friday evening, and Marquette was one of three Greater Alton area teams -- the others were Roxana and Civic Memorial -- that were in action despite the conditions. .
The Explorers will look to extend their win streak to five on Wednesday, when they play Breese Central on the road. They have played five games on the road this season and won four of them.
WRESTLING
KANSAS CITY STAMPEDE -- The Granite City Warriors had six wrestlers with top-10 finishes at the Kansas City Stampede over the weekend.
Chris Santiago and Josh Harsh turned in Granite City’s best finishes in the tournament. Both wrestlers placed fourth in the silver division at 106 and 120, respectively.
Korinthian Nabors finished fifth in 285 in the gold division after beating Trent Hixson of Omaha (Neb.) Skutt Catholic 6-2 in the fifth-place match.
Kyle Thompson placed eighth in the 195 in the gold division after losing 4-1 to John Meyer of Neosho (Mo.) in the seventh-place match.
Chase Nelson placed ninth at 170 silver division and John Hirsch came in 10th in the 145 gold division.
The Warriors will compete in the William “Red” Schmitt Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29-30 at Granite City. They placed 11th in the tournament in each of the last two years.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
RED BUD 38, ROXANA 27 -- Emma Lucas scored 16 points, but her effort wasn’t enough to help the Shells beat the Musketeers in the consolation championship game of the Gibault Candy Cane Classic.
Roxana dropped to 5-8 and finished with a 1-2 mark at the Gibault tournament. The squad started tournament play with a 36-32 loss to Gibault in the first round before bouncing back to beat EA-WR 46-33 in the consolation semifinals.
The Shells will play Red Bud again at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 26 in the first round of the Lebanon/Wesclin Christmas Tournament. Roxana is the 12th seed in the 16-team tournament.
VALMEYER 38, EA-WR 36 -- The Oilers dropped to 2-9 with an overtime loss to the First Mates in the seventh-place game of the Gibault Candy Cane Classic on Saturday.
EA-WR finished 0-3 in the eight-team tournament. The team lost to eventual tournament champion Columbia in the first round and to Roxana in the consolation semifinals.
The Oilers’ next game will be at 5 p.m. on Dec. 26 against Carlinville in the first game of Carlinville Tournament.
MARQUETTE-GIBAULT CANCELLED -- The Explorers were scheduled to play Gibault in the third-place game of the Gibault Candy Cane Classic on Saturday, but it was cancelled due to wintry conditions.
Marquette, which placed second in last year’s tournament, beat Red Bud in the first round and lost to Waterloo in the semifinals.
The Explorers (5-7) will be back in action on Jan. 2 against Bunker Hill.
BOWLING
HERRIN TOURNAMENT -- Granite City junior Ricky Hard earned a medal at the Herrin Invitational on Saturday, placing second with a six-game score of 1,218.
Hard helped the Warriors finish third out of six teams with 5,191 pins in the boys' division.
Granite City placed fifth in the girls' division with a 4,014.
The GCHS boys' team will compete in the O'Fallon Team Challenge at 8 a.m. on Dec. 30 at St. Clair Bowl. The girls' squad returns to action on Jan. 3 against Belleville East at Airport Bowl.
