ALTON WINS TITLE OF ITS OWN TOURNAMENT, CM FINISHES THIRD — For the second straight weekend the Alton Redbirds won the title of their own volleyball tournament.
Alton went 5-0 to win the Alton Invitational on Saturday after winning the Redbird Classic the week before. It's the second consecutive season AHS has won both tourney titles. The Birds are off to a torrid start at 12-2 overall. The Redbirds are back in action at 5:30 p.m. tonight at Cahokia.
Alton's Jada Green was named MVP of the tournament. She had 34 kills and seven blocks in five games for the Redbirds. She was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Annie Evans and Savannah Fisher. Evans was the MVP of the Redbird Classic.
Alton defeated Carrollton, Roxana, Jersey and Civic Memorial in straight games in the tourney, while taking three games to best Fort Zumwalt North, which was second with a 4-1 mark at AHS.
The remainder of the field rounded out with CM (3-2), Jersey (2-3), Carrollton (1-4) and Roxana (0-5).
The Eagles began Friday with wins over Jersey and Roxana to run their record to 5-0 on the season, their best start since an 8-0 beginning in 2010. That was their last winning season at 20-11-2.
CM went 1-2 on Saturday though, losing to FZN and Alton, while beating Carrollton. Now 6-2 on the season, the Eagles have tied their win total of 2014 and hope to surpass it at 7 p.m. tonight when they play host to the Roxana Shells.
CM's Kaity Kappler and Kennedy Carnes were named to the all-tournament squad.
The Shells struggled in Alton, not winning a game, but Braeden Lackey was named to the all-tournament team. Roxana is now 5-8 on the season and looks to get back on track tonight in Bethalto.
EXPLORERS SECOND AT EA-WR/MARQUETTE TOURNEY — The Marquette Catholic Explorers ran to second place at the annual East Alton-Wood River/Marquette Catholic Tournament on Saturday.
The Explorers went 2-1 in the bracketed tournament, losing 25-22, 23-25, 15-2 in the finals to Wesclin.
Marquette is now 7-6 on the season. It produced wins over Litchfield and Springfield Lanphier in straight games Saturday.
Junior Michelle Cameron and sophomore Marissa Nosco were named to the all-tournament team for the Explorers.
Marquette returns to action at 6 p.m. tonight vs. Lebanon at home.
REDBIRDS SEVENTH AT ALTON INVITE, GRANITE CITY FOURTH — Alton played host to the Redbird Classic at Woodlands Golf Course and came away with a seventh-place finish on Saturday.
Edwardsville won the tournament with a score of 346. The Redbirds fired 401 for their seventh-place finish, while Granite City carded a 383, good for fourth.
The order for the tournament field was: EHS, O'Fallon (356), Belleville East (371), GCHS, Collinsville (394), Columbia (394), AHS, Triad (407) and Belleville West (478). O'Fallon's Brooke Boatman was medalist with an 83.
The Redbirds got scoring from: Morgan Bemis (96), Annie Maynard (99), Katie Keller (102) and Addison Gregory (104).
Granite City's scoring was from: Mallory O'Gara (89), Megan Keel (94), McKenna Beaver (98) and Ashley Richey (102).
On Friday the Redbirds participated in the O'Fallon Invite and also brought home a seventh-place finish.
Alton shot 410 as a team, led by Bemis' 94. She was joined in the team-scoring by Katie Keller (98), Annie Maynard (105) and Alaina Kottabi (113).
Althoff came away the title in O'Fallon with a 355. Gabby David of the Crusaders shot an 80 to earn medalist honors.
The Birds are back in action today in Southwestern Conference action, welcoming Collinsville to Rolling Hills Golf Course at 4 p.m.
ALTON BLANKS CM AT GORDON MOORE — The Alton Redbirds welcomed local rival Civic Memorial to Gordon Moore Park on Saturday and came away with a 6-0 victory.
The Redbirds improved to 4-2-2 with the victory, while CM plummeted to 1-8 with the loss.
Alton's Eric Ferenbach returned to the lineup Saturday, posting three goals and two assists to lead the way in the victory. Ferenbach missed Tuesday's victory over Belleville East.
Stephen Nguyen added a goal and an assist, while Matt Bower and Skylar Funk each had goals also and C.J. Nasello dished out an assist.
Devin Colley posted the win in goal.
Colin Hall and Trevor Panyik each had a pair of shots for the Eagles to no avail in the loss.
Alton delves into the McCluer North Tournament this week, while CM heads to Triad at 5:30 p.m. today for Mississippi Valley Conference action.
MARQUETTE STUMBLES VS. BELLEVILLE WEST — The Marquette Catholic Explorers stumbled in a 8-1 loss to the Belleville West Maroons on Saturday.
Marquette dipped to 3-4-3 with the lopsided loss.
The Explorers were outshot 22-9 by the Maroons and fell behind 3-0 at halftime.
Marquette finally scored in the 67th minute when leading scorer Zach Weinman accepted a pass from Chris Hartrich and put it away.
Brandon Sanfilippo made 15 saves in goal while taking the loss.
The Explorers will try and get back on track at 6:30 p.m. today at Granite City.
GRANITE CITY ENDS IN SCORELESS TIE AT SHG — The Granite City Warriors trekked to Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin on Saturday and escaped with a 0-0 stalemate.
The Warriors are now 0-5-3 on the season as they continue to search for that elusive first win out of a grueling schedule.
Goalie Ryan Houston corralled two saves in the tie.
GCHS will look for it's first victory when it plays host to Marquette Catholic at 6:30 p.m. tonight in Granite City.
GRANITE CITY'S ANDREW O'KEEFE, CM'S ALEX SINGLETON POST WINS, ALTON BODES WELL AT BELLEVILLE WEST INVITE — Granite City's Andrew O'Keefe won the boys' race Civic Memorial's Alex Singleton prevailed in the girls' race on Saturday at the Belleville West Invite.
O'Keefe, a freshman, turned in a time of 16:04.35 to earn the win in the boys' race, while the Warriors came in seventh as a team. Other scorers were: Jake Roustio, Eri Neri, Tyler Tindall and Joshua Royce.
The Alton Redbirds compiled a solid team finish in the boys' race also. The Birds were third, led by Arie Macias' fourth-place finish in 16:23.51. He was joined in the team scoring by: Alex Davis, James Steinman, Jett Durr and Nick Northway.
CM nabbed fifth place as a team in the boys' race. Cohl Callies guided the Eagles with a ninth-place finish in 17:23.73. The rest of the scoring lineup rounded out with Frank Trost, Weihua Li, Jarrett Lacquement and Parker Borth.
In the girls' race, Singleton got her first win of her senior season, turning in a time of 19:41.22. She was one of three Eagles who participated in the race. Singleton was joined by: Monica Baker and Alexis Enke in the race.
Granite City entered a team in the girls' contest, finishing fifth. The Warriors got a seventh-place finish out of Alyssa Comer to lead the charge. Other scorers were: Alexandra McLaren, Tara Khounsana, Emily Johnson and Mariah Vaughn.
Alton entered four girls in the race, led by Savanna Durr who finished 25th individually. Abbi Day, Madeline Corxford and Christina Thompson were also participants for the Redbirds.
