ALTON WINS TITLE OF ITS OWN TOURNEY; GRANITE CITY COMES UP SHORT — For the second consecutive season the Alton Redbirds are champions of the Redbird Classic volleyball tournament at AHS.
On Friday and Saturday the Redbirds went 5-0 to win the tournament. Annie Evans was named tournament MVP for Alton, too. The Birds are now 7-1 on the season.
Jada Green and Sydney Schmidt joined Evans on the all-tournament team for the Redbirds.
Alton bested Gillespie 26-24, 25-16 and Triad 25-18, 23-25, 16-14 on Friday. On Saturday the Birds tacked on wins over Granite City (25-12, 25-21), Southwestern (20-25, 25-21, 15-8) and Orchard Farm (14-25, 25-22, 15-13).
The Granite City Warriors struggled in the tournament, going 0-5 over the two days. Granite City is 0-6 on the season.
Megan Burge of the Warriors was named to the all-tournament team.
GCHS is back in action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at home against Civic Memorial in nonconference action, while the Redbirds kick off Southwestern Conference play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at home with Belleville East.
MARQUETTE TIES WITH ALTHOFF — The Marquette Catholic Explorers finished in a 1-1 tie with Althoff on Saturday.
The Explorers are now 3-2-2 after the tie and will prepare for a Labor Day showdown with the Edwardsville Tigers at 6 p.m. Monday at Gordon Moore Park.
Althoff took the early 1-0 lead on Saturday, but Marquette tied it up when Jacob File scored in the 29th minute on an assist from Noah Fahnestock.
Brandon Sanfilippo made eight saves in the tie. The Crusaders and Explorers were tied 9-9 on shots in the game, while Marquette led 5-4 on corners.
ALTON FALLS TO QUINCY — The Alton Redbirds dipped to 2-2-2 on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to the Blue Devils in Quincy.
The Birds return to Southwestern Conference action at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Gordon Moore Park against Belleville East. They are 0-0-1 in SWC play.
GRANITE CITY SHUTOUT BY SPRINGFIELD — The Granite City Warriors dropped a 5-0 game on the road at Springfield Saturday.
With the loss, the Warriors slipped to 0-4-2 on the season with the setback.
They are idle until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Belleville West when they return to Southwestern Conference action.
EXPLORERS TAKE THIRD IN TIGHT ALL CATHOLIC TOURNAMENT — The annual All Catholic Tournament hosted by Marquette Catholic is always a bear and Saturday was no different at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Godfrey.
The Explorers finished third, but just two strokes out of first place. The tournament results rounded out with Althoff shooting a 309 to win, while Quincy Notre Dame was second with a 310 and Marquette finished third with a 311.
Mater Dei (333) and Gibault (350) rounded out the team scoring while Father McGivney entered a pair of individuals. Althoff's Matthew McCarthy was medalist with a 71.
Marquette got a 74 from Michael Holtz to lead the way, while Duncan McLain (78), Kolten Bauer (79) and Jack Patterson (80) rounded out the team scoring. Nick Messinger (85) and Sam Cogan (88) also participated for the Explorers.
