ROXANA GOES 1-3 IN RED BUD; LACKEY BECOMES SINGLE-SEASON ACE LEADER — The Roxana Shells participated in the Red Bud Tournament on Saturday, finishing with a 1-3 mark.
The Shells are now 13-17 on the season. They defeated Granite City 21-14, 11-21, 15-4, but then lost 21-7, 21-14 to Red Bud, 21-13, 21-11 to Dupo and 21-15, 21-18 to Chester.
The tournament was highlighted in the opening match with the Warriors when Roxana sophomore Braeden Lackey became the single-season ace leader, surpassing the record previously owned by Julie Perez.
Kara Meyer paced the hitters with 12 kills in the four matches. Niah Bevolo, 16 assists, and Brittany Alexander, 11 assists, set up the net attack. Keely Reardon chipped in with six kills, Abby Palen had four and Taylor Westfall had three.
The defense was busy, with Meyer logging a team-high 20 digs. She was joined in double digits by Palen, 17, Lackey, 12, Alexander, 11, and Bevolo with 10.
The Shells return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday at Southwestern for South Central Conference volleyball.
GRANITE CITY FINISHES 1-3 IN RED BUD — The Granite City Warriors escaped from the Red Bud Tournament with a 1-4 record on Saturday.
The Warriors are now 6-19-2 on the season. They opened with a 21-13, 21-15 loss to the host Musketeers and then lost 21-14, 11-21, 15-4 to Roxana before salvaging a win over Chester, 16-21, 21-15, 15-13. GCHS then lost 21-8, 21-1 to Red Bud again and closed with a 22-20, 14-21, 15-8 loss to Dupo.
Granite City returns to action at 6 p.m. Thursday at Belleville East.
ALTON STRUGGLES IN HIGHLAND TOURNAMENT — The Alton Redbirds traveled to Highland to participate in the Highland Tournament on Friday and Saturday and had a rough go of it.
The Redbirds went 0-4 in tournament action. The are now 21-9-1 on the season with three regular season matches remaining.
Highland won the tournament, while O'Fallon was second, Carbondale was third, Breese Central fourth and Alton finished fifth.
The Birds delve back into the home stretch of the Southwestern Conference at 6 p.m. Tuesday at O'Fallon, while they head to Edwardsville at 6 p.m. Thursday and finish up the regular season at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at Belleville West.
ROXANA SEES SEASON END IN 5-0 LOSS TO GREENVILLE — The Roxana Shells fell 5-0 to the Greenville Comets on Friday in the Class 1A Greenville Regional, thus ending their season.
The Shells concluded the 2015 campaign with a 7-13-1 overall record. Greenville was the sixth seed in the regional tournament, while Roxana was the seventh seed.
The Comets advance to face No. 1 Althoff at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. East Alton-Wood River battles Metro East Lutheran at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Greenville in the other regional semifinal match.
