Charlie Sheets goes up for a shot in the Shells last varsity game of this season against Greenville.
CARLINVILLE – Charlie Sheets of Roxana played a pivotal part in leading the West team to a victory Sunday in a boys all-star basketball game.
The Shells’ senior scored 20 points to help the West outscore the East 130-107 in the 12th annual Carlinville Rotary Club All-Star Classic at Carlinville High. The East defeated the West 78-58 in the girls game.
Reed Rusten of North Greene poured in 23 points and earned MVP honors in the boys victory. The two teams set an All-Star scoring record along the way.
The West owned a 57-56 halftime advantage, but the East outscored the West 33-22 in the third quarter to take control of the game. The West’s Taten Musso of North Mac led all scorers with 28 points.
Rusten added to his big night by winning the County Financial 3-point shooting event. He made 12 of 15 treys, or one more than Tyler Herpstreith of Nokomis. Matt Hartnett of Roxana edged Rusten for The Cubby Hole slam dunk contest by accumulating 43 points. Rusten had 42 points.
Joe Pembrook, who guided Greenfield to a 24-4 record, was named Carlinville Rotary Boys Coach of the Year. The Tigers’ impressive record marked only the second time in 44 years they won 20 games in a season.
Carrollton’s Brian Madison was honored as the Carlinville Rotary Girls Coach of the Year. He directed the Hawks to a 25-7 record and second-place finish in the IHSA Class 1A finals.
Kennah White of Hillsboro hit for 14 points to lead the East girls to their win. She sank four treys in the process. The East led only 31-30 at halftime, then outscored the West 28-11 in the third quarter for their fourth consecutive all-star victory.
Ellen Gray of Gillespie finished first in the 3-point shooting contest by sinking 11 treys and tying an all-star record. Pana’s Breanna Schoonover was runner-up. She made seven 3-point shots.
