EDWARDSVILLE – The SIUE women's cross country team will compete in the EIU Walt Crawford Open in Charleston Friday at 4:45 p.m. to begin their 2014 season.
The focus this season is constant improvement, according to head coach Eileen McAllister.
"We have more of a competitive atmosphere at practice this year," said McAllister. "There's more of the pack mentality. We'll be a closer pack than we have been in the past."
"We need our freshmen to have an impact and be in our top three," said McAllister. "Both Clark and Miller will be competing for top spots."
Erin Kennedy is the team's only sophomore and looks to build off of her freshman season.
"She has made tremendous strides this year," said McAllister.
The team has four juniors, including red-shirt junior Emily Conlon.
"Emily is our seasoned veteran. She brings knowledge and leadership to the younger runners."
"I told them at the end of the last season that they'd have big roles to fill this year," said McAllister. "They've really embraced that."
