Here’s a quick glance at the five Greater Alton area prep wrestling programs before the postseason begins on Feb. 7.
ALTON (Class 3A) — Through Tuesday the Redbirds were perched at 12-1 overall and 3-1 in the Southwestern Conference. They were ranked No. 25 in the state in Class 3A.
Alton battled Edwardsville and Althoff on Thursday. AHS was tied with the Tigers, Belleville West and Granite City atop the SWC entering Thursday.
The Redbirds were first at the Mascoutah Invitational (Dec. 19-20) and the Geneva Invitational (Jan. 9-10). They also finished fourth at the William “Red” Schmitt Holiday Tournament in Granite City (Dec. 29-30).
Phyllip DeLoach (145) was ranked third in the state with a 26-0 record, Qiant’e Wagner (160) was fourth and sat at 25-1 and Nicholas DeLoach (152) was seventh with a flawless 26-0 mark. Connor Broyles (120), KeOntay Holmes (182) and Darian Pierson (285) were all honorable mentions at press time.
CM (Class 2A) — The Eagles were 0-6 through their first six dual matches. They finished ninth at the CM Tournament (Dec. 6), 11th at the Murdale Tournament in Carbondale (Jan. 10), 12th at the Pontiac Tournament (Dec. 13) and 14th at Mascoutah (Dec. 19-20).
Junior Drake Boverie is 21-0 and has individual titles at all four tourneys. Boverie (132) is ranked No. 6 in the state.
Senior Brayton Williams (152) is 10-1. He was sidelined early with a broken thumb. His one loss came in Mascoutah, his first day back. He was third there and first in Carbondale. He was ranked No. 3 in the state at press time.
ROXANA (Class 1A) — The Shells were 9-10 overall on the season through their first 19 matches. They finished 13th at the New Year’s Challenge in Danville (Dec. 30-31), 14th at Princeton (Jan. 9-10) and 23rd at Mascoutah (Dec. 19-20).
Dalton Brito (126) is 28-4 and ranked No. 4 in the state, while Brett Nyswonger (220) is 10th and James Henseler (106) is rated No. 12 and sits at 22-11. Jarod Foiles (132) is 25-7 and Luke Curtis (182) is 26-8; both are honorable mentions in the state.
EA-WR (Class 1A) — The Oilers were 1-4 through five duals. They were sixth at the Mount Olive Tournament (Jan. 10), 13th at CM (Dec. 6) and 24th at Mascoutah (Dec. 19-20).
With seven total wrestlers, numbers are low. EA-WR is led by Drew Sobol (106), ninth in the state, and Zac Blasioli (152), an honorable mention. Zac Kincade (182) took second at Mount Olive. Sobol was tops there.
MARQUETTE (Class 1A) — The Marquette Catholic Explorers only have one wrestler, senior Deyton Mitchell. Mitchell (120) is 11-3 and an honorable mention.
He was fourth individually at CM and second recently at Cumberland. Mitchell will compete in the Rochester Tournament on Jan. 24.
He is verbally committed to Division III Knox College in Galesburg.
