Clark’s skills go beyond makeovers — she did the salon’s landscaping.
GODFREY — Teena Clark is making over more than just people — recently, her entire salon, Teena’s Day Spa and Boutique, went through major renovations. She shifted the front room around, including her makeup displays with new products, to make room for the biggest change: three new hairstylists, all with new stories and talents to bring to Teena’s.
Cheri Seets owned her own salon for six years before coming to Teena’s.
“I’ve always been interested in Teena’s because of the stuff she offers,” Seets said.
With Seets came Kelsey Rexing, an Alton High School graduate who returned from beauty school in Ohio to work with Seets.
“We came and checked the place out and just liked the way it was run,” Rexing said.
Also in the lineup is Julie Kaufmann, a stylist for 26 years. She is an educator for Scruples Hair Care, where she has five certifications and two more on the way. When she isn’t teaching or working with her clients, she works backstage at hair shows. Clark said all three are independently contracted and bringing in new clientele, making the renovations well worthwhile.
Clark said she’s excited about the additions to her makeup displays and products. Teena’s sells bareMinerals skin products, and their new liquid foundation has been a big hit, Clark said.
“It’s been flying off the shelves … and it looks so beautiful on,” she said.
Teena’s makeup display, Clark said, is a collection for groups that like many varieties of makeup.
Clark reflects on the journey she’s had with Teena’s, first buying the building with her late husband in September 2009.
“The house was built like a steamboat,” Clark said, adding that it was, in fact, built by a steamboat captain in 1850 and they remodeled the whole building. The business started with just Clark and two hairstylists in the remodeled building. This summer’s new personnel brings Teena’s up to five hairstylists along with two masseuses and two nail artists — and Clark, who specializes in permanent makeup and esthetics. Clark has been doing makeup since 1990, adding permanent makeup to her skill set in 2006. Since then, she has done about 500 eyeliners and 300 permanent eyebrows. Clark also said the renovations are not finished, and she still is finding opportunities for more changes and remodeling. These changes include looking for new stylists and masseuses as well as a new receptionist.
Teena’s is celebrating its renovations with bargains — permanent makeup is on a summer special. Combined with the new products in the makeup area and the new hairstylists, Teena’s is becoming a whole new business with new faces and new experiences for customers. And this is just as Clark desired for her salon — new opportunities to make customers look and feel great.
“It’s a very rewarding job, making people look and feel beautiful,” Clark said.
