John A. Ceppenati, 89, of Godfrey, passed away at 4:35 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at Alton Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.
He was born on May 18, 1925, in Chicago, the son of the late Gaetano and Mary (Regoni) Ceppenati.
He married the former June Smith on Dec. 26, 1947, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.
John worked out of Labor Local 338 in Wood River and was a self-taught auctioneer. He was an avid horseman and loved racing thoroughbreds.
In addition to his wife, June, he is also survived by a son, Larry Ceppenati (Rhonda Sheppard) of Godfrey; a son, Peter “Tony” Ceppenati of Godfrey; a daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Blake Pazero of Dow; a son, John L. Ceppenati of Godfrey; and four grandchildren, Nicole Pazero of Dow, Danielle Pazero of Jerseyville, Blake Pazero of Dow, and Guy Ceppenati of Highland.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by five siblings, Kathryn Welch, Norma Hamilton, and Pauline, Peter and Rosalie Ceppenati.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until a time of a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton with Father Peter Donohoe officiating.
Cremation will follow.
Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association or American Cancer Society.
