ROXANA ROUTES GILLESPIE — The Roxana Shells kept rolling in the South Central Conference Friday on the road, barreling past Gillespie 34-2.
The Shells erased a 2-0 deficit in the first quarter with 34 unanswered points. They led 12-2 at the break and scored 22 second-half points.
With the win Roxana improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Miners plummeted to 0-7.
Logan Reardon hauled the rock 17 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Shells. Blake Vandiver added 15 carries for 112 yards and two scores and Seth Chester had seven carries for 72 yards to accompany one catch for an 11-yard TD. Quarterback Chance Foss was 2 for 4 with 11 yards and a score.
On defense, Reardon and Zach Golenor picked up interceptions. Reardon also had five tackles and three assisted tackles, while Luke Curtis turned in five tackles and two assisted tackles.
Friday's win should get the Shells into the postseason for the first time since 2003, but one more victory will seal the deal. Roxana returns home in Week 8 at 7 p.m. against Staunton.
MASCOUTAH EDGES CM — The Civic Memorial Eagles saw their playoff hopes slip away on Friday night in Mascoutah.
The Eagles were edged out by the Indians 21-20. The loss dropped CM to 2-5 and 0-4 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Mascoutah is 4-3 and 2-2.
Zach Klocke had two TDs for the Eagles on runs of 28 yards and 22 yards, while Brayton Williams rushed in a 5-yard score in the third quarter. Quarterback Adam Hill found receiver Brett Lane on a 2-point conversion after Williams' third-quarter score.
CM returns home to face Jersey in Week 7.
EA-WR'S WOES CONTINUE — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers came up way short on the road Friday, losing to Pawnee 70-0.
The loss dropped EA-WR 1-6 on the season and 1-4 in the Prairie State Conference. Pawnee is now 6-1 and 5-0 with the win.
The Oilers are back home in Week 8 against South Fork.
