
Civic Memorial Eagles
VOLLEYBALL
CM EARNS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON — Civic Memorial celebrated its first volleyball victory of the season Tuesday night. And Cara Melton played a big part in the Eagles’ win.
Melton supplied eight kills, eight service points and five digs as the host Eagles defeated Granite City, 25-23, 25-18. CM improved to 1-2, while Granite City dipped to 1-3.
Alaina Trosley (seven digs, three kills and six service points), Kennedy Carnes (nine service points), Monica Ledesma (nine assists) and Sydney Marshall (seven assists) also sparked the Eagles.
CM is scheduled to resume action against Jersey on Friday in the Alton Tournament. The tourney concludes Saturday.
MARQUETTE SUFFERS SETBACK VS. HILLSBORO — The Explorers pushed the Hiltoppers to three games, but fell 25-21, 20-25, 26-24 on Tuesday.
Anna Daughtery provided five kills and eight digs for the Explorers. Alyssa Herzing (10 assists and three aces), Taylor Rook (five kills), Katie Gierer (eight digs) and Brittany Pace (nine blocks, including five solo ones) also spurred the Explorers.
Marquette, now 3-5, is back in action at 7 p.m. tonight at Jersey.
BOYS' SOCCER
EXPLORERS BLANK GREENVILLE ON THE ROAD — Matt Buchheit tallied two goals in sending the Explorers 3-0 past host Greenville in nonconference action. Zach Weinman also logged a goal as Marquette improved to 2-4-1.
Jacob File, Adam Hammond and Jon Stewart contributed assists. Goalie Brandon Sanfilippo made eight saves in recording the shutout.
The Explorers welcome Belleville East at 6 p.m. on Thursday. They are scheduled to play at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Belleville West.
Rain delays events
The Edwardsville Fall Cross Country Invitational, set for Wednesday on the SIUE course, has been postponed because of rain. It’s rescheduled for Thursday, starting at 4 p.m.
Elsewhere, the Freeburg at East Alton-Wood River soccer match, slated for Wednesday, has been postponed to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6 at Freeburg.
