BOYS' SOCCER
EXPLORERS BLANK CLAYTON — The Marquette Catholic Explorers raced to a 3-0 shutout win over Clayton on Wednesday in the CYC/Bob Guelker Tournament.
Marquette improved to 5-8-1 on the season with the victory. Sophomore Zach Weinman paced the Explorers with two goals in the win.
Weinman scored in the 45th minute on an assist by Matt Buchheit for the first goal. Junior Jacob File then added goal No. 2 for Marquette in the 64th minute on a feed from Collin Dunn and Weinman struck again in the 65th minute for the third goal on a pass from Jon Stewart.
Brandon Sanfilippo garnered the save in goal with eight saves.
BOYS' GOLF
CM, EA-WR AND ROXANA CAN'T GET BY MASCOUTAH — Six teams battled at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River on Wednesday with Mascoutah coming put on top.
The Indians fired a 161 to take the honors. Civic Memorial took second on a fifth-score tiebreaker over East Alton-Wood River with both teams shooting 163s. Roxana was fourth with a 169, followed by: Southwestern (195) and Waterloo Gibault (202).
Drew Sobol carded a 35 to take medalist honors. The rest of the Oiler lineup included: Jake Hei (41), Brett Gaines (43) and Hunter O'Brien (44).
CM edged EA-WR for second with team scoring coming from: J. Ryan Waters (38), Eric Howes (41), Alec Hilliard (42) and Konnar Loewen (42).
Roxana got scoring from: Zack Moore (38), Zack Carlisle (41), Joe Ingram (44) and Mitchell Royse (46).
ALTON COMES UP SHORT AT TRIPLE LAKES — The Alton Redbirds traveled to Triple Lakes Golf Course in Milstadt for a Southwestern Conference dual with Belleville West Wednesday and came up a little short.
The Birds fired a 166 to finish 10 strokes off the Maroons (156).
Mitch Klug led Alton with a 40, while Sam Ballard (41), Nick Jamison (42) and Andrew Campbell (43) rounded out the scoring for the Redbirds. Alex Rubin (48) and Max Hunter (49) also played for AHS.
GIRLS' GOLF
REDBIRDS GET BACK ON TRACK — The Alton Redbirds rebounded nicely after Tuesday's loss to Edwardsville in Southwestern Conference action.
The Redbirds welcomed Granite City to Rolling Hills Golf Club in more SWC play Wednesday, carding a 169 to GCHS' 199 to corral the win.
Courtney Hachmann was medalist with a 38. The rest of the AHS lineup rounded out with: Ashley Orr (42), Natalie Long (43) and Samantha Patton (46).
CM CAN'T GET OVER HUMP VS. TRIAD AND STAUNTON — The Civic Memorial Eagles came up short in a triangular with Triad and Staunton on Wednesday at Cloverleaf Golf Course.
The triangular, played on the back 9, was won by Triad with a 209. Staunton was second carding a 214, while CM was third with a 216.
Sara Gwillim of the Eagles garnered medalist honors with 42. The rest of the CM scoring came from: Kayla Slaven (54), Izzy Roberts (58) and Lisa Logterman (62).
