GIRLS' BASKETBALL
SHELLS CATAPULT PAST OILERS — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers will have to wait to see if the third time is a charm.
The Roxana Shells handed the Oilers their second defeat in two meetings this season, 56-29, on Thursday in the Gibault Candy Cane Classic. Roxana will travel to EA-WR on Jan. 19 to complete the trifecta on the season.
With the win, Roxana improved to 5-6 on the season, while the Oilers skidded to 2-8.
It was a big night for Maddy Sheraka of the Shells as she led all scorers with 21 points and surpassed 1,000 points in her stellar career to boot. Sara Kreutztrager, 13 points, and Eric Sheets, 12 points, joined Sheraka in double figures for Roxana.
Kari Westbrook paced EA-WR with 13 points, while Carly Campbell chipped in seven points for good measure in the loss.
CM CAN'T FIGURE OUT HIGHLAND — The Civic Memorial Eagles traveled to Highland for a Mississippi Valley Conference showdown on Thursday and limped away with a 56-41 defeat.
Highland, the queens of the MVC thus far, remained undefeated at 10-0 and 3-0. The Eagles dropped to 7-3 and 2-1 with the loss.
CM led 11-8 following the first quarter, but the Bulldogs responded with a 19-13 second quarter and didn't look back.
Allie Troeckler and Katelyn Turbyfill posted 15 points apiece to pace the Eagles in the loss. Highland was directed by three double-digit performers with Olivia LaPorta and Amanda Ponce each scoring 13 points and Emily Vonderhaar chipping in with 12.
MARQUETTE FALTERS VS. BUNKER HILL — The Marquette Catholic Explorers couldn't finish off the Bunker Hill Minutemaids Thursday on the road, ultimately falling 44-36.
The Explorers led 23-21 after three quarters, but Bunker Hill erupted to outscore Marquette 23-13 over the final eight minutes and steal victory from the jaws of defeat.
With the loss, the Explorers sank to 3-6 on the season and 1-1 in the Prairie State Conference, while the Minutemaids improved to 5-5 and 2-1 with the triumph.
Andria Pace guided Marquette in the loss with nine points. Other scorers for the Explorers were: Claire Snider with seven, Caitlyn Hanlon and Brittany Pace with six each, Elena Gable with five and Amber Robinson with three.
Bunker Hill embraced a game-high 12 points from Heidi Ostendorf and 10 points apiece from Ava Ostendorf and Taylor Oxford.
Marquette now hosts Civic Memorial at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
ICE HOCKEY
ALTON SKATES PAST KAHOKS IN SHUTOUT — The Alton Redbirds wasted little time dispatching the Collinsville Kahoks on Thursday at the East Alton Ice Arena.
Alton blanked the Kahoks 7-0 behind 23 saves from goalie Mitchell Klug to elevate its record to 9-2. Collinsville sank to .500 at 5-5 with the losing effort.
Kain Henson took care of the scoring punch for the Birds, logging a hat trick in the win, including two goals in the opening period. Alton led 4-0 after one period and 6-0 after the second.
Alex Rubin, Austin Erthal, Brendan Lowe and Jake Cunningham also scored for the Redbirds, while Henson, Cunningham, Ben Drake and Jake Bohn picked up assists in the win.
Henson finished with three goals and two assists.
