EXPLORERS WIN TRIANGULAR — The excellent campaign for the Marquette Catholic Explorers continued on Monday at Hillsboro Country Club.
Marquette carded a 147 as a team to defeat Hillsboro (174) and Vandalia (189). The win improved the Explorers to 18-0 on the season.
Max Goepel of Marquette garnered medalist honors with a 1-under par 35 to lead the way. Michael Holtz (37), Andrew McCluskey (37) and Nick Messinger (38) rounded out the team scoring. Steve Elliott (45) and Duncan McLain (53) also competed for the Explorers on Monday.
ALTON FALLS TO O'FALLON AT HOME — The Alton Redbirds came up short against the O'Fallon Panthers at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course on Monday.
O'Fallon won the Southwestern Conference dual with a 167 to outdistance Alton, which carded a 182.
Alex Rubin (41) directed the Redbirds, with Jacob Skrabacz (46), Sam Ballard (47) and Nick Jamison (48) joining him to complete the team scoring. Mitch Klug (49), Andrew Campbell (50), Ryan Boyd (50) and Max Hunter (58) also played the links for AHS on Monday.
O'Fallon's Logan Harris was medalist, firing a 1-over par 37.
GIRLS' GOLF
REDBIRDS GRAB WIN OVER COLLINSVILLE — The Alton Redbirds kept their perfect season in the Southwestern Conference rolling with a win over Collinsville on Monday.
The Redbirds blasted a 154 to cruise past the Kahoks, who shot a 182.
Courtney Hachmann was tops with a par 36 at Arlington Greens in Collinsville. Natalie Long (37), Tori Hays (39) and Samantha Patton (42) joined Hachmann in team scoring for AHS.
Alton is back in action at 3:30 p.m. today in a triangular with Edwardsville and Granite City at Oak Brook Golf Club in Edwardsville. The Tigers are also undefeated in the SWC.
CM PREVAILS IN TRIANGULAR AT CLOVERLEAF — The Civic Memorial Eagles defeated Mascoutah and Mater Dei in a triangular Monday at Cloverleaf Golf Course.
CM fired a 172 for the top spot with Mascoutah (195) and Mater Dei (198) coming in second and third.
Kayla Slavens, Allison Hemingway and Sara Gwillim all tied for the top spot with 41s. Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles were Angelina Bailey and Izabella Roberts with 49s.
VOLLEYBALL
ALTON CONTINUES HOT START — The Alton Redbirds picked up a nonconference victory over Southwestern on Monday at home to improve to 19-1 on the season.
AHS swept past the Piasa Birds 26-24, 25-13 for the victory.
Jordan Nolan paced the Redbirds with 19 assists and 13 service points, while Megan Paulda and Jada Green sparked the offense with seven kills apiece. Paulda also led the way with 17 digs. Savannah Fisher had a good night, posting four kills and 12 digs while Rachel Cauley contributed seven service points, four kills and seven digs, Green and Nolan each had seven digs and Paulda turned in six service points.
Alton now plays host to Collinsville at 5:45 p.m. tonight in Southwestern Conference action. The Redbirds are currently 2-0 in the SWC.
ROXANA SWEEPS PAST MOUNT OLIVE — The Roxana Shells rolled past Mount Olive at Milazzo Gym on Monday, 25-20, 25-16.
The win improved the Shells to 11-6 on the season. The Wildcats sank to 9-3 with the loss.
Next on the docket for Roxana is a 6 p.m. match today vs. Carlinville at home.
EA-WR COMES UP SHORT TO BULLDOGS — The East-Alton Wood River Oilers lost to the Staunton Bulldogs Monday on the road 25-21, 25-14.
Lexie Johnson and Chrissy Long paced the Oilers with three kills apiece in the loss, while Jenna Walker contributed four digs and Kari Westbrook added eight assists.
EA-WR now welcomes Marquette Catholic at 5 p.m. tonight in a Prairie State Conference match.
GIRLS' TENNIS
ALTON WINS TRIO OF MATCHES AT TRIAD — The Alton Redbirds traveled to Triad on Monday and defeated Roxana 4-1, Sacred Heart Griffin 4-1 and host Triad 3-2.
With the triumphs, Alton is now 12-5 on the season.
Janelle Wilson was a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 singles, while Sydnee Maberry and Katie Cronin were 3-0 at No. 3 doubles on the day.
Next up for the Redbirds is a 4 p.m. match Wednesday at O'Fallon.
MARQUETTE STYMIES HILLSBORO — Marquette Catholic blanked Hillsboro on Monday 9-0.
The Explorers improved to 5-2 on the season with the victory. Wins came from Shelby Jones, Laura Moore, Elena Gable, Adri Ventigmilia, Claire Snider and Abbi Simonds in singles. In doubles action, Moore and Gable, Jones and Ventigmilia and Snider and Simonds garnered wins.
Marquette is back on the courts at 4 p.m. today at Jerseyville.
BOYS' SOCCER
EXPLORERS START CYC TOURNEY WITH LOSS — The Marquette Catholic Explorers came up on the short end of the stick Monday in their first game of the CYC/Bob Guelker Tournament.
The Explorers were shut out 3-0 by Timberland, which scored all of its goals in the first half.
Goalie Brandon Sanfilippo corralled eight saves in the loss for Marquette.
The Explorers are now 4-8-1 on the season and will return to action at 4:30 p.m. today against Clayton at Trinity Catholic High School in St. Louis.
